Glenmorangie Grand Vintage 1998 is one of many whiskeys from the Bond House No. 1 Collection. This little piece of history was made as one of the earliest experiments by Dr. Bill Lumsden, who also became a Distillery Manager during that period. The idea of making whiskey from new charred oak casks was also born then. Charred oak was used to enrich and balance the well-known fruitiness of whiskeys from this distillery. Most of the casks, specially made for distillery, were used to add the distinctive aroma of oak to the whiskey at its finish. However, in a few of them, Dr. Bill also put a new-made spirit, which would become the heart of this Grand Vintage. Whiskey has developed a rich color of amber as well as a wide range of aromas thanks to aging in wood. Primarily, aromas of caramel, smooth wood, baked apples, and ripe fruit like pear. Followed by aromas of vanilla with a hint of mint and warm notes of wax. But the classic citrus aromas of lemon and mandarin are still present, along with a combination of tobacco and lavender. Rich in flavor, at first a wide range of fruity aromas combined with chocolate. Followed by buttery aromas with candies, aromas of raisins and figs, followed by spicy notes of cloves, anise and cinnamon. The delicate but long-lasting finish on the palate leaves memorable aromas of sugared almonds, leather and dates.
