Josić
Baranja is situated in the northeastern part of Croatia, between the Danube and the Drava rivers, stretching all the way to the Hungarian border. For centuries, vine has been grown in Banova Kosa, a hill extending from west to east along the entire Baranja. The Romans called “Kosa” the Golden Hill, not after a gold mine, but after the “golden drop” which has always flowed from its hillsides. At that time, wine was especially valued since it served for refreshment and entertainment. The vineyards existed during the Turkish rule and survived to the present day.
In 1999, the Josić family from Osijek bought an old wine cellar in Baranja of 42 meters in length, dating back to 1935. They renovated it, but kept the cellar’s traditional appearance, and equipped it with modern technology. At the same time, they bought around 1.6 ha (4 acres) of vine plantings. Quality wines of the Josić family are produced from indigenous grape varieties of Baranja obtained from their vineyards in Banova Kosa.
