Bire Winery is located in Lumbarda on the island of Korčula. It is characterized by the cultivation of autochtonous varieties such as Grk (which is a synonym for the island of Korčula, where this variety gives the best results) and Plavac mali (so-called pagadebit on Korčula). It is assumed that Grk variety was brought to Korčula by the Greeks themselves, in 500 BC or that the variety was named after the bitter taste of the wine.
The winery, which is named after the family's local name - Bire, is owned by Fran Milina. He was among the first to revitalize traditional terraced vineyards over 100 years old, proving that for Grk is not so crucial the sandy soil, but the micro location. Winery Bire today has the first organic vineyard on the island Korčula and is continuously working to promote of this autochthonous island variety.
