Ardbeg Spectacular Limited Edition

Ardbeg is not exactly shy when it comes to experimenting with new distilling methods. So it comes as no surprise that this limited-edition whisky – released to celebrate Ardbeg Day 2024 – is quite the showstopping spectacle. The result of an experimental marriage of whisky matured in rare port wine casks (a first for Ardbeg) and the more classic ex-bourbon barrels, it's a peculiar yet exciting mix of flavours and aromas. As you'd expect, there's a load of full-on smoke, but with that comes fragrant, floral top notes and a backdrop of sweetness.
Perfumed and aromatic notes of lavender, vetiver and incense, as well some deeper notes of leather and almond appear on the nose. A splash of water reveals woodsmoke, damp peat moss, a hint of menthol and more antique leather. The mouthfeel is salty but viscous and leads into a burst of powerful salty and savoury flavours. There's also a background sweetness with flavours of smoky pear crumble and fudge, and a long lingering finish.
