Ardbeg is revered around the world as the peatiest, smokiest, most complex whisky of them all. Yet it does not flaunt the peat; rather it gives way to the malt, the natural sweetness of which subtly intrudes and produces perfect balance.
Ardbeg whisky creators set out to make the rawest, smokiest Ardbeg ever. The result is Ardbeg Wee Beastie and this tongue-tingling, beautifully smoky dram is the youngest Ardbeg ever made.
With bright gold colour, at the first sniff alerts you to a nearby presence… heightened senses are filled with very bright, fresh herbal notes, with creeping hints of vanilla and pear. Rich Turkish coffee mingles with sappy pine resin, with honey-glazed ham lurking in the background. Out of nowhere, a sharp tang of smoke and a crack of fresh black pepper fire warning shots across the senses. Suddenly, a rich, explosive mouthfeel bursts forth with chocolate, creosote and tar. A powerful blast of eucalyptus thrashes about with antiseptic lozenges and aniseed. The raw, smoky intensity gathers pace, before smoked bacon and savoury meats sink into the palate. The long, salty mouthcoating finish retreats, with hints of cocoa and fudge slinking slowly away.
The core expression of the Ardbeg portfolio is Ardbeg Ten Years Old. Launched in 2000, it was an instant hit with connoisseurs and peat-aficionados the world over and has retained its place at the top table ever since. In 2008 Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible named it World Whisky of the Year. Typically, most whiskies are chill-filtered and reduced to a strength of 40% ABV. Ardbeg Ten Years Old, however, is non chill-filtered and has a strength of 46% ABV, thus retaining maximum flavour, at the same time giving more body and added depth. It’s whisky with none of the goodness taken out! A taste of Ten Years Old is intense smoky fruit, peat effervescing with tangy lemon and lime and warm creamy cappuccino. The smoky, aniseedy, almondy finish goes on and on.
