Bodegas Escudero

The Escudero family began its winemaking activity in 1852, when Juan Escudero, started making wines in oak vats in the Riojan village of Grávalos. In 1950s, Benito Escudero, the father of the current generation of cellar masters, began to produce the first Riojan sparkling wines, called cava, which at that time were still very much handcrafted. Today the fourth generation of this cellar master family, dedicates itself with the same love and devotion to the viticulture, the vinification and the Cava production. The Escudero family ownnearly 200 hectares of vineyards in La Rioja and Navarra with an average age of 70 years.  Most of them are located on the southern slopes of Monte Yerga, on poor, stony soils that are ideal for a vineyard with low yields but excellent quality. The continental climate of the area, cold winters, warm and sunny summers with significant differences between day and night temperatures, this whole set of climatic influences, provide the grapes with a unique and distinctive character. Today the familiy Escudero owns 4 wineries and they practice agriculture commited to nature, with special care of each plot in personalized way, so each can develop its personality and their unique characteristics which can be found also in their uinique wines.
