Château Cheval Blanc
The history of Château Cheval Blanc begins far in the past, more precisely in the 15th century. The work philosophy from year to year is to show the world only the best from Saint Emillion. Today's form of the winery was created in the 19th century, when the current thirty-nine hectars of the winery were formed. In that period, the winery also joined the world's competitions and started to win medals. In 1862, at the Universal Exhibition in London, the Winery won its first medal, and at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1878, it won its first gold medal. Through the years, the only goal was to produce high-quality wines, which on the wine market and auctions were well known as wines from the first growths in Medoc. In 1954, the winery obtained the highest possible distinction in the first classification of Saint-Emilion wines, Premier Grand Cru Classé “A”. This rank was confirmed in the following classifications through the following centuries. Thanks t this recognition, Cheval Blanc also became a member of the exclusive “Club of 9” comprising the first growths of Bordeaux.
The new page was turned at the end of the 20th century. The owners of the winery became Bernard Arnault and Baron Albert Frere. They brought new spirit and ideas while respecting the chateau's history and tradition. In 2011, the cellar was finished. It is a work of architect Christian de Portzamparc in futuristic style.
Thirty-nine hectares of vineyards are located on the border with Pomerol. On the four plots are cultivated vines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Each plot has its own profile characteristics, depending on the age of the vines, surface area and type of soil. Therefore, the wines from each plot have a specific characteristic profile. As well as in vineyards, a lot of care has been put into the spectacular cellar, which is also included in World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is constructed in the shape of two big white waves that rise out of the ground. Inside the cellar are fifty-two vats specially designed in Italy.
