Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon have been blended in Australia since the 19th century, combining the best of each variety. With this wine, Cape Mentelle paid homage to this Australian tradition and created an extremely rich and complex wine.
The grapes come from three vineyards in the Margaret River area, aged 15, 35 and 48 years, making the most of the vines of different ages, soils, and climates. The 2018 season in Australia has been very good, allowing for optimal ripening conditions, and with the potential to prove itself being a classic vintage. Malolactic fermentation was carried out in 5% of new French oak barrels, followed by aging on lees for 16 months which resulted with multilayered and complex wine.
The wine is dark cherry in color with red edges. On the nose and in the mouth, the sumptuous and soft notes of shiraz are beautifully complemented by the elegance and length of the cabernet. There are numerous aromas of black berries, sweet spices, and smoked charcuterie. The wine opening will soon reveal finer shades of cocoa, umami, leather and tobacco, and herbs such as sage and spearmint. Taste buds will be flooded with rich and powerful aromas of fruits, spices, and meat. Notes of blackberries and blackcurrant are paired with cured meat, and roasted coffee. You can feel the tones of oak with vanilla, roasted walnuts, and mocha, intertwined with warm caramel. Tannins are present in great volume, but they are elegant and nicely rounded.
This wine of juicy complexity goes very well with food and will be a perfect addition to any special occasion.
