Krug Clos du Mesnil in a wooden box
The "single plot" wines are the next logical step in the structural breakdown of wines of specific origin. In the winegrower's or winemaker's search for the best of the best, we reach a part of the vineyard. Mesnil-sur-Oger is a much larger vineyard than Clos du Mesnil. This part of the vineyard was fenced back in 1698 and winegrowers believe that the drywall itself contributes to the microclimate within the plot. Krug Clos Du Mesnil was the first champagne of its kind - dedicated to a plot and named after it. The winemakers of the Krug champagne house consider Clos Du Mesnil to be the best thing their chardonnay can offer. This plot is 0.74 ha (1.83 acres) in size, not much larger than Clos D'Ambonnay.
