Clai

The Clai winery is situated near the Krasica village near Buje (the so-called Bijele Zemlje or White Soil). There is a total of 6 ha (15 acres) of vineyards, some old, some reconstructed, and some newly planted.

Clai does not produce ordinary wines that one would consider “normal”. Their wines are best described as organic. “My wine is organic matter!” - proudly claims the self-taught, passionate winemaker. Chemistry has no place in his vineyard. The same goes for the basement. He strictly abides by some of the principles of biodynamics, such as decanting and bottling the wines in line with the lunar phases.

Even though he believes that Istria’s particularity lies in its indigenous varieties, Clai, a fan of cuvée, has also planted sauvignon blanc, pinot gris and malvazija. Besides refosco, he has also planted cabernet sauvignon and merlot.
