Kopar pairs beautifully with grilled steaks and other grilled red meats, slow-roasted lamb, game and rich meat dishes served with reduced jus-based sauces. Mature hard cheeses are also an excellent match, their intensity and richness complementing the wine’s structure and complexity.

Kopar is an iconic red blend from the Hungarian winery Attila Gere, produced in the Villány wine region and first created in 1997 under the influence of the great wines of Bordeaux. It takes its name from the vineyard site of the same name, whose Hungarian name means “barren” or “bare”, referring to the exposed limestone rocks of Szársomlyó Hill. The blend consists of Cabernet Franc (50%), Merlot (40%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), varieties that complement one another beautifully, combining freshness and aromatic complexity with richness and structure. Fermentation takes place in large wooden vats, followed by malolactic fermentation and 16 months of ageing in small oak barrels, using a combination of new and once-used barrels. The intense aromatic profile reveals wild berries, black pepper, toasted oak spices, tobacco and subtle mineral nuances. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and layered, with pronounced yet ripe tannins, a harmonious structure and a long, persistent finish. Its rich texture and balance of fruit, spice and oak lend it elegance despite its powerful character, while its considerable ageing potential allows it to develop further complexity and roundness in the bottle.
